CASE REPAIR
The traditional name for the covers of a book is "case". It includes the front and back boards, the spine and the joints connecting them. The following sections deal
with several types of repairs that can be made to the case in order to make the book sound and extend its useful life.
REPAIRING CORNERS
The following instructions are for straightening out and reinforcing frayed, bumped, crushed, or delaminated corners.
If the damage is limited to fraying bookcloth, rub a small amount of mix into the cloth and pat down the loose fibers along the edges of the corner to adhere them to the board.
If the cloth or paper covering the
corners is peeling back, it can be reattached using a scrap of Mylar or card:
apply mix to the Mylar scrap and slip it, adhesive side up, under the loose cloth or paper. Rub lightly with fingertips to transfer the adhesive to the back of the cloth
or paper. Slide the Mylar or card out and rub down the cloth or paper gently with a bonefolder. Align cloth threads as needed and shape the corner with fingers and bonefolder. Air dry.
If the corners are delaminated as well as frayed, separate the layers a little more with a microspatula. Pick up adhesive with the tip of the spatula and insert a dab
between each layer. Press the layers together firmly and wipe off excess adhesive that oozes out. Close the book, slide a piece of rigid cardboard and wax paper under
the corner for support and shape the corner with a bonefolder. Let air dry.
You need not clamp the corner but it must remain undisturbed until completely dry and hard.
