PAMPHLET BINDING, single signature
Staples can rust and make holes in paper. They can also damage the thread used to sew a pamphlet into a binder. Remove the staples by prying the legs open with a dull knife or
use a staple remover that slips under the staple (not the kind with claws).
Mend tears as needed with Japanese tissue and Methyl cellulose. (See Paper Repair section above for instructions. See also Greenfield or Kyle for detailed instructions).
If extra protection is needed, cut a sheet of acid-free bond, a bit more than twice the width of the pamphlet by its height. The grain of the paper should be short. Fold the
sheet in half and put it around the pamphlet.
Position pamphlet inside an
archival pamphlet binder. Choose the smallest pam binder that will cover the pamphlet. The squares at top and bottom should be between 1/4 and 1/2 inch. Trim pam binder if needed.
Open the pamphlet to the center and secure the pages, original wrapper, additional blank wrapper (optional) and the pam binder together at top and bottom with
large plastic covered paper clips. Be careful not to tear the pages.
Using an awl if pamphlet is thick, or simply the sewing needle, pierce three holes through the center fold. Try to use some of the original staple holes. Sew as
shown in drawings.
Begin in the center hole, going from inside the book to the outside. Leave a 4" tail of thread inside. Gently pull the thread snug, parallel
to the centerfold. If you pull at right angles to the fold, the paper may tear.
Go into the hole at top of book, from the outside. Skip the center hole and proceed to the hole at the bottom of the book; push the
needle from inside to outside. Come back to center hole, ending inside the pamphlet at center. Pull thread snug. Tie both ends of thread together with a square knot.
Fray ends if you wish.
If the pamphlet is large, 5-hole sewing may be better. This is the sewing pattern.
