SELF-CLOSING KYLE WRAPPER

This enclosure can be made quickly if the institution has a good board cutter. Otherwise a knife and straight edge can be used, but the process will be much more time consuming and will probably not be cost-effective. See Suppliers List at end for makers of inexpensive phase boxes.

Select acid-free 20 pt. folder stock or bristol. The wrapper is madeintwo pieces, one vertical, the other horizontal. Grain direction of both pieces must be parallel to the folds to ensure sharp folds (in the short direction of each piece).

Each piece is wrapped around the volume at right angles to each other and the two are fastened together with double-sided tape.

Determine the height and width of the book. Place a triangle against the spine of the book to determine the thickness.

Vertical piece

Place the book on a sheet of bristol, making sure the grain of the board is at right angles to the spine of the book (this way the folds will be with the grain). Align it along two edges, and mark the measurements. The piece should be equal  to the width (W) of the book by 2 1/2 times its height + twice its thickness (W x 2 1/2H + 2T).

Center the book on the vertical piece. Fold the extending portions aroundthe book and crease against the top and bottomedges. Remove the book and sharpen the creases with a bone folder. Cut a thumb notch on one side as illustrated. Angle the corners of the flaps.

Horizontal piece

Wrap the book in the vertical piece. Place this package on the sheet of bristol, this time with the grain running parallel to the spine of the book. Measure and cut a long piece the height (H) of the book in its wrapper by twice the width, plus 3 times the thickness, plus 2" (H x 2W + 3T + 2").

Make the first fold a little less than one thickness (T) from the right edgeand stand the flap up. Push the wrapped book against this flap and continue to fold and crease around the book. Sharpen folds with a bone folder. Angle and trim the flap created by the last fold.

Apply double-sided tape to the middle section of the vertical piece, opposite the thumb notch. Place the horizontal piece on top of the vertical piece. When aligned properly, take paper strip off the double-sided tape and rub the two parts together. Wrap the book, folding the flaps in sequence as illustrated
